PBX Engineering is proud to announce that our Wildlife Detection System (WDS) wins its first award at the 2017 Annual ACEC-BC Awards for Engineering Excellence.
The WDS was entered in the Natural Resources & Habitat category competing against some of Canada’s largest engineering firms. The Award was presented to PBX Engineering at the prestigious ACEC-BC Awards Gala on April 8th. While it is an honour to be recognized amongst our peers and competitors, we also look forward to continuing our work that impacts positively both the environment and the general population.

Each year, thousands of collisions with wildlife are reported on BC highways. Wildlife Vehicle Collisions (WVCs) endanger various wildlife species, often result in serious personal injuries, and cost millions of dollars annually. Through an analysis of historical collision information, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) identified two corridors along Highway 3 in Southeastern BC as having the highest densities of large WVCs in the province. MoTI sought to reduce the number of WVCs in the area to protect the surrounding natural wildlife habitat and improve safety for travelers. The Ministry determined the most appropriate solution to be the application of an effective technology to detect the presence of wildlife and advise motorists to slow down. The solution consists of a suite of Intelligent Transportation System components integrated with high-performance security technologies. The combination of these technologies provides a highly effective fusion of driver notification systems from the transportation field and sophisticated detection and analysis technologies from the security field. When a large animal is detected on or near the corridor, the control system activates a series of warning signs that advise motorists of the presence of animals. PBX Engineering planned, designed, and commissioned this unique system. The resulting Wildlife Detection System provides the area’s wildlife with greater protection and motorists within the corridor a safer commute than ever before. This is an industry-leading, made-in-BC solution, applying locally developed technology and engineering expertise to overcome a difficult challenge, positively affecting our natural environment, as well as the people of BC.
